Teams that spent a decade winning Google rankings keep asking us whether that work is now wasted. Short answer: no — but the mental model has to change. SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links where position ten still gets some traffic. AEO optimizes for a composed paragraph where inclusion is binary and there is no consolation prize.
Running Sourceable across four engines, we watch the same brands win in one paradigm and vanish in the other. The differences cluster into three shifts.
From keywords to entities
Google matched strings; models resolve entities. An answer engine does not look for pages containing "software agency Ahmedabad" — it asks its internal graph what it knows about your organization: founded when, does what, trusted by whom, corroborated where. Inconsistent names, addresses, or descriptions across your site, LinkedIn, and directories do not just dilute ranking signal; they fracture the entity itself, and a fractured entity is unciteable.
“SEO asked: do we rank? AEO asks: does the machine know who we are, and can it prove what we claim?”
From backlinks to corroboration and citations
Backlinks were votes for a page. Answer engines weigh corroboration — independent sources agreeing on facts about you — and retrieval engines like Perplexity prefer sources they can quote: reviews with numbers, comparisons with tables, pages with stated prices. A single verified Clutch review with a project value on it can do more inside an AI answer than fifty directory backlinks that merely exist.
Where the disciplines genuinely conflict
SEO habits can hurt AEO. Keyword-stuffed titles read as noise to a model summarizing you. Ten thin location pages fracture your entity; one authoritative page consolidates it. Gating your best content behind forms hides it from retrieval entirely. And burying the answer under 800 words of preamble — classic SEO padding — means the model quotes whoever stated it plainly. Write the answer first; let the context follow.
Keep the technical SEO — crawlability, sitemaps, performance all still matter, because retrieval rides on them. Redirect the content energy from chasing keywords to consolidating your entity and publishing things worth quoting. The next piece in this series covers how to measure whether any of it is working.
