We think that wastes everyone’s time, so here are the real shapes: at Emperor Brains, a senior dedicated engineer typically runs $4,000–$8,000 per month, depending on seniority, specialization, and commitment length. A full pod of four to five engineers with a lead lands between $20,000 and $40,000 per month.
For comparison, a single senior engineer in the US costs $12,500–$20,000+ per month once salary, benefits, equity, and overhead are loaded — before you pay the three-to-six-month hiring tax. The arithmetic is why our retail clients have renewed for six straight years. But the number only makes sense if you understand what moves it.
What moves the rate
Three things, in order of impact. Specialization: an AI engineer who ships agents to production costs more than a generalist — and saves you multiples of the difference. Seniority mix: a pod of five seniors is not the same product as one senior reviewing four juniors; we quote the former and say so. Commitment: a twelve-month reservation prices lower than month-to-month, because stability lets us plan people’s lives, and that stability is exactly what you are buying.

What the monthly rate includes — and what it replaces
The rate covers the engineer, their equipment and tooling, a delivery manager across the pod, recruiting and replacement risk, and the four-plus hours of daily timezone overlap with US and European teams. It replaces recruiter fees (typically 20% of first-year salary per hire), benefits administration, retention risk, and the quiet cost of a seat that stays empty for a quarter.
When a pod is the wrong answer
Honesty clause: if you need fewer than two engineers, or the work is a well-bounded eight-week build, a fixed-scope project prices better than a pod — and we will tell you so on the first call. Pods win when the roadmap is continuous, the domain knowledge compounds, and losing context every few months would cost more than the rate difference.
